District One stretches from southern boundaries of the Coeur d' Alene Indian Reservation to the Canadian border encompassing all the northern panhandle of the state. Notable landmarks in the district include Lake Coeur d' Alene, Lake Pend Oreille, Priest Lake, the old Cataldo Mission, Wallace and the Silver Valley, formerly the Silver Capital of the United States.
District 1 maintains the following facilities: Patrol, Communications, Investigations, Forensics and POST
District 1 Patrol is located in Coeur d' Alene on the shores of Lake Coeur d' Alene.
There are 50 employees assigned to traffic patrol enforcement, commercial vehicle enforcement, communications, and support services.
The District 1 Investigations office conducts a variety of criminal investigations that include homicide, sexual assault, child pornography, murder-for-hire, conflict investigations for other agencies, and background investigations. Additionally, the office is very busy working narcotics investigations in our efforts to dismantle not only local, but interstate and inter-country narcotic smuggling organizations. The District 1 detectives are very diverse and well experienced at investigating a multitude of serious crimes. With the recent addition of two detectives committed to enforcement of alcoholic beverage related crime and licensing of the beer, wine and liquor licensed establishments in north Idaho, the duties and expertise have further expanded.
While clandestine methamphetamine laboratories are still of a major concern and investigative resources are applied to that issue, District 1 Investigations has realized an increase in smuggling activities. The transportation and importation of narcotics from other states and countries include methamphetamine, ecstasy, heroin, cocaine, pharmaceuticals, and marijuana. Recent arrests and seizures indicate Oregon, Washington, Montana, and other states' legalization of medicinal marijuana has contributed to an influx of marijuana seized in this District.
We provide community and business awareness training on the hazards and problems associated with the manufacturing of methamphetamine, controlled substance recognition and the dangers of controlled substances to schools and community groups. We currently have a representative on the Idaho Drug Free Youth board and the Kootenai County Substance Abuse Council to help enhance educational efforts regarding these issues. District 1 personnel adhere to the department's Vision to: Fairly and aggressively enforce the law, enhance public safety, embodies proactive policing principles, is effective and efficient, and is a good steward of public funds and resources.
